Paolo is responsible for the Podcasting Kit for Sharepoint which was recently made available as open source software. We debate the combination of Sharepoint + Open Source + Enterprise Adoption.

• CORRECTION: Oops. Wizzard Media did NOT release an iPhone podcatcher at NME. They’ve offered a browser-based “receiver” for awhile now. They introduced a new video player at NME.


• OMG! Steve got an iPhone! We discuss the consumption model for apps, digital media and the deplorable battery life.


• Kris and Chia-Lin still cling to their Treo 700p phones


• Steve wonders if we’ll see the same kind of excitement and adoption of the iPhone from other handset makers and ecosystems. Kris thinks Google Android.


• Royalty rate hikes may shut down Pandora. Last.fm may not have the same issues since they are owned by CBS and the media giant already pays the appropriate royalties.


• Steve loves Simplify Media on the iPhone which gives him the ability to stream his iTunes library to his phone…along with 30 other friends. John thinks that might extend beyond “Fair Use.”


• A federal judge ruled on Wednesday that copyright holders must consider the potential “fair use” of their works before sending copyright takedown notices to online video sites. How novel…


• When will the strong arm tactics of these industry groups come to an end? Never. They’ll just morph.


• Kris wonders why a service like Magnatune hasn’t had a greater impact in terms of changing the way record labels conduct business. Ditto for CD Baby.


• Microsoft contracts with Jerry Seinfeld to stump for Windows Vista…along with Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates.

• YouTube is capturing nearly 80% of the online video viewing market

• Gene Simmons (yes, that Gene Simmons) thinks that Radiohead, the internets, p2p - and the FANS - are killing the recording industry.


• EMI is not only suing MP3Tunes.com, but its founder, Michael Robertson, personally.


• Microsoft has decided to support MSN Music customers (and the related DRM) until - at least - the end of 2011. They’ll revisit their decision at that time.


• Audible files will soon play on the Zune.

• Is Yahoo done? Finished? Cooked? Finis? Where’s the growth opportunity?
• Yahoo = Interruption. Google = Permission.
• How long will the “old fashioned media buy” (and buyer) be the status quo?
• Regardless of currently available data, there’s anecdotal evidence that Q2 interactive advertising will prove to be soft.
• FaceBook will release their API as Open Source Software. John thinks that Open Social should adopt the FaceBook API as the standard and discard the Open Social API.
• AOL has joined the Open Social Coalition
• John’s Netflix Roku box has shipped. We’ll discuss it next week.
• Amazon Unbox will shortly release its streaming video service. Steve has been testing it.

• Roku and Netflix release a set-top box that supports the Netflix video-on-demand service. (John is awaiting its arrival to Federico HQ.) The service provides access to 10,000 of Netflix’s 100,000 title library, providing Netflix subscribers maintain an $18.99/month service level. Ken and Chia-Lin think that John will be disappointed by the selection. Ryan Block gives it a relatively positive review.
• Ken wants to see simultaneous release of films in the theater, on cable, on-demand and DVD. John tells him to keep dreaming…
• Online TV advertising is no longer an afterthought in the TV Upfront
• CBS buys CNET for $1.8 billion
• Ars Technica was bought by Conde Nast for $25 million and will be merged with the Wired properties.
• Microsoft will provide rebates to consumers who find and purchase products using MSN Search
• Twitter receives a $15 million investment round. We all wonder what the business model might be, but it’s undeniable that there’s passion for the service. John calls it the “back channel of the internet” while Ken likens it to the web 2.0 version of “the crawl” on television.

• Events: Podcamp NYC is on April 25th and 26th at Brooklyn Polytechnic University. As a result of Daddy Duty, John can’t attend this year. Ken will be in Baltimore with his in-laws for Greek Easter and Steve is just a dork. Ken is attending the San Fran Music Tech Summit on the 8th, 9th and 10th. Steve will probably attend Web 2.0 in San Francisco on April 22 - 25. John is planning to attend the Conversational Marketing Summit on June 9th and 10th in NYC. (Congratulations to John Battelle & Co. on the close of their recent round of venture financing.)
• The Podcast Audience grew 40% in one year according to a study by Arbitron-Edison Media.
• New York passes “The Amazon Tax” which mandates that all ecommerce providers must collect New York State sales tax for items being shipped to the state - a hefty 8.25%. California however, has rejected a similar tax.
• John is searching for treatment for a new maladay called “Twitter Fatigue.” We talk about twitter, twitter tools (FriendFeed, SocialThing, AlertThingy), the types of twitter spam, etc.
• By the way: how is twitter going to make money? Why is it that twitterific can insert advertising into your twitter stream and generate revenue from it but twitter can’t - or just doesn’t? Steve points out that Pownce inserts advertising.
• Ken was introduced to twitter by the CEO of MatchMine, Mike Troiano (twitter: @miketrap)
• If you have a jailbroken iPhone, check out twinkle - a native twitter client that inserts your location into your twitter posts using the iPhone’s location services.
• The Quest for Yahoo continues, this time with new crusaders: AOL, Google, and now a combined Microsoft-News Corp bid. We remain confused.
• AOL’s Platform A is the top advertising network by reach.
• Blockbuster to buy Circuit City. Like most people, we wonder WTF they’re thinking. Oh yeah, and they’re going to offer set top box for streaming video. Again: WTF?

• Online and Mobile ad spending reached $29 Billion in 2007. Given the ubiquity of mobile phone penetration and the rising popularity of smartphones, does it matter if those numbers are bundled?
• Eric talks about the nascent sponsorship program for his IPTV shows
• Microsoft may develop a version of Office for the iPhone

• Gigs: Ken started a new gig as the Director of Sales for MatchMine. Congrats, Ken.
• Events: Ken attended SXSW; Steve, Ken and John attended the Business of APIs Conference; John will be attending Jeff Pulver’s Social Media Breakfast
• The deal closed: Audible is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Amazon. Congrats to all.
• Steve Jobs says, “No Flash for the iPhone.” Adobe would develop it, if they could, but claims they need lower level hooks into the OS and help from Apple to do it. Perhaps as part of Apple’s ActiveSync License they’ll allow Microsoft’s Silverlight instead? Hmmm.
• Is the iPhone Apple’s proverbial Trojan Horse for getting into Enterprises?
• Google reports that it’s seeing growth in mobile internet usage on several platforms - most notably the iPhone. When Android handsets are released, what kind of usage will they see then?
• Rich Miner, a Google exec, says that Android will outsell the iPhone.
• Rumors have Apple starting a music subscription service - one that may be subsidized (READ: Free) for iPod and iPhone owners. The CEO of eMusic calls it a “classic anti-trust” case of “tying.”
