In this episode, John Federico, Chia-Lin Simmons and Ken Gellman are joined by John Havens, the About.com Guide to Podcasting; Organizer of Podcamp NYC and founder of Podcast Vision and Voice.
- ODM is a Platinum Sponsor of Podcamp NYC. Come see us on April 6th and 7th at The New School.
- John F. will be attending the panel on Open Metrics at Podcamp NYC in hopes of engaging that contingent in a larger discussion on podcast metrics.
- Stolen Zune recovered when the thief tried to “join the social”
- Viacom and Google aren’t so social these days as the former sues the latter for $1 billion dollars. We’re officially referring to these types of dollars figures at “Dr. Evil Numbers.”
- Michael Eisner’s new company, VuGuru, will be producing video content for the Internet, cellphones and other portable devices.
- The William Morris Agency is working with Narrowstep to produce original content for the Internet and other digital media channels, completely bypassing traditional channels of creation and distribution.
- Chia-Lin asks, “Do the studios actually contribute to the creative process, or just bankroll it and package it?”
- In years passed, record labels had to contend with the retail channel, radio stations and MTV. Today they have to contend with iTunes to move their wares…while competing with all the other media types that can be found at the iTunes Store. Chia-Lin points out that this also validates the digital channel as a viable one.
- John H. proposes that “Some folks think that the grass roots podcasters made iTunes and now Apple is catering to Big Media.” True?
- John F. posits that Apple is a company that is all about the “short head of the long tail” not a company focused on the Long Tail.
- Gardenfork.tv
- Ken thinks it’s difficult for Big Media to sell these new digital channels. John F. likens it to an addiction…and just plain old inertia. (”Hey! Who moved my cheese!?”)
- Starbucks is going to be launching its own record label, hoping to sell more music to the 44 million people who enter their stores each week. Howard Schultz thinks that the company is diluting its brand by entering all these new markets. So why do it?
- Chia-Lin thinks that 85% of Americans probably have a Starbucks within 10 or 15 miles from them. We have absolutely no statistics to back that up, but it sure feels like it, eh? (Of course, there’s never one around when I’m desperate for a double shot…) Can someone show us a mashup of Starbucks locations in the U.S. on a Google Map?
- We digress into the retail model of Starbucks and its effects on the sale of ancilliary products. John H. wants to order his Grande Soy Latte via SMS on his way to the train station. Mr. Schultz, are you listening?
- Online advertising’s dirty little secret and why the subprime lending market could sink some ad-supported Internet media companies.
Our closing music is Democracy by Alexander Blu.
