On Digital Media, Episode #30
In this episode John Federico, Chia-Lin Simmons and Steve Hatch sing along with Alanis Morissette and talk about:
- Alanis Morissette’s cover of the Black Eyed Peas “My Humps” - it’s hilarious…and brilliant.
- We were at Podcamp NYC. Were you?
- C.C. Chapman thinks we had the best t-shirt at the un-conference.
- Chia-Lin and John both organized discussions at Podcamp NYC: Chia-Lin talked about delivering podcasts to wireless handsets and John talked about New Measurement for New Media. (No surprise there…)
- Marty Leone captured John’s entire talk on his MacBook Pro using the built-in iSight Camera.
- We finally met the notorious Christopher Penn at Podcamp NYC. Chris is one of the original organizers of the first Podcamp and the Podcamp concept. (Chris Brogan is his partner-in-crime in that regard.)
- Chris also organized Bum Rush the Charts, of which we have some stats about.
- John Wall “gifted” the BRTC song to me (”Mine Again” by Black Lab). I, in turn, gifted it to Steve Hatch. And so on, and so on… The song reached #99 on the U.S. rock charts.
- Scott Sigler gets a three-book deal with Crown Publishing (a Random House imprint). (John learned about it through Twitter!) We think this is another great example of the power of Social Media and self-publishing. Chia-Lin thinks this could be the first crack in the walls of book publishing. You heard it hear first, folks… ;)
- Listener email! A listener schools us on how music piracy is really organized.
- Steve has a grand conspiracy theory on music piracy and promotion. John will by him a tinfoil hat for the next episode. John and Steve proceed to bicker and banter…
- No happy campers at the RIAA this week: the music industry henchmen have lost their first case and are required to pay the winning party’s legal fees.
- Apple to launch a subscription service?
- SnoCap and CD Baby partner with MySpace to create a music store on MySpace. John knows people who’ve gottten paid podcasts into the iTunes Store using the “CD Baby loophole”.
- TuneCore is going to be providing distribution into digital channels on flat fee model. Chia-Lin says, “Show me the spreadsheet.”
- SanDisk and Yahoo! introduce “Sansa Connect”, a wi-fi enabled portable music player. (The Tao is the first wi-fi enabled PMP that we know of.)
- Disney releases data on its MVNO…although not the data we were looking for.
- ABI Research thinks that there needs to be a new business model around mobile advertising but no one yet knows what that is. (Duh.)
- Chia-Lin’s cat is a luddite.
- Palm is working on its own Linux-based OS for their Treo line of smartphones. Supposedly, it’ll be released toward the end of this year.
Our wine selection was Coppola Rosso.
Our closing music is Democracy from Alexander Blu.
