On Digital Media, Episode #38: The Tangent Show
For this episode we invited John Wall of The M Show and Marketing Over Coffee to join John Federico and Steve Hatch over Skype. (Thanks to Doug Kaye and the folks at GigaVox Media for The Levelator. Without it, this show would not have been possible…trust us.)
In this episode, we yammer about:
- Google book search now available on book publishers own web sites
- At the Book Expo last week in NYC, the CEO of Macmillan Publishers steals two of Google’s laptops to give mean old Google a “taste of its own medicine”. What’s next? A fight in the schoolyard? Stealing lunch money?
- Old Publishing likes to own everything. New media - even “new publishing” understands new ways of doing business.
- C.C. Chapman and John Wall both recently had pieces published in BostonNow, the new free news daily in the Boston area.
- Book sales to slow as publishers are discovering that they are competing for consumers’ attention along with television, film, radio, the internet and portable media.
- According to The NPD Group, kids are adopting new media at an ever-decreasing age, currently at just over 6 years old. Steve and John F. think that’s still too high as their 3 and 4 year-olds (respectively) are already using the LeapFrog Leapster. Steve think’s John F.’s son will have root on the old PowerMac in a few days…
- Millenials have no concept of “appointment media” the way other generations did
- NBC is going to allow consumers to embed streaming video of their shows in blogs and other web sites. “‘Cause the only worse than people stealing your stuff is people not watching your stuff at all…”
- The music industry’s slump spills over into ancillary businesses. When you don’t produce records anymore, what do you give out to commemorate sales records - gold iPods?
- Blizzard Software is suing ‘peons4hire’ for spamming World of Warcraft players for the purchase of virtual gold in WoW
- Rocketboom begins a sponsorship program: $3,000 per episode. YouTube is the first sponsor…and Rocketboom will now be distributed on YouTube. Coincidence? We think not.
In Studio 1A we were enjoying good ol’ Coppola Rosso and a 2005 Oak Grove Zinfandel. We have no idea what John Wall was sipping at his location…
Our closing music is Democracy from Alexander Blu.
