On Digital Media, Episode# 53: Kindling
In this episode John Federico, Ken Gellman and Steve Hatch discuss:
- Shout out to loyal ODM listener Adam Broitman for being so patient with our technical difficulties
- Christmas came early for John, who just received his Kindle
. We debate it’s merits and foibles in a classic ODM-style smack down. Bottom line: John likes it. (NOTE: John eluded that the Sony Reader has less than 3,000 titles - it’s probably more than that, but still not equal to Amazon’s 90,000 titles for the Kindle. John also indicated that the “Blog” titles are listed under the experimental menu. That’s innacurate.)
- John was invited to a dinner by the investment banking division of a large U.S. bank. Of the 50+ attendees, most were buy-side or sell-side analysts. There were 6 to 8 of us from various sectors of the media business. These are the questions they grilled us on in an open discussion format over dinner.
- 2008: Recession or not?
- If so, which category or categories of advertisers will be more resilient? Which will be weaker?
- Which media will be more resilient? Which will be weaker?
- How long will it take television advertisers to pull their money out and put into other media that will deliver on their “GRP” (reach) goals, especially given the writer’s strike?
- Google: Friend or Foe to the Media Industry?
- Where do you see advertisers moving their money right now?
- 2008: Recession or not?
- Mssrs Gellman and Hatch give their responses to these questions, followed by John’s responses and finally, followed by what John heard from the people who were at the dinner event.
- Thanks to everyone in attendance at dinner for inspiring this show.
