On Digital Media, Episode #59: Overmodulated
In this episode John Federico, Chia-Lin Simmons and Steve Hatch disect:
- The latest on the Microsoft-Yahoo acquisition attempt. It’s gettin’ ugly…
- Yahoo sheds hundreds of people in an attempt to right itself. There are plenty of companies in the Valley looking for talented folks who are ready to scoop them up. Shockingly, our friend Susan Mernit is one of them. Go woo her while you still can!
- Despite retention packages, a bunch of folks have left voluntarily: Bradley Horowitz left for Google while Jeff Bonforte left to become CEO of Xobni.. In the event of a Microsoft takeover, the packages will likely vest immediately, creating something of a a poison pill for the hostile acquirer.
- The 7-11 Deal: Could Yahoo Japan buy Yahoo proper?
- Sergey Brin finds the potential of a Microsoft-Yahoo merger “unnerving” - but not because of its potential to be a competitive force.
- Google is expanding its AdSense for Video advertising program. Publishers need to stream a minimum of 1 million streams per month in order to qualify for the program.
- VideoEgg has also announced their video advertising program, charging advertisers only when users “Engage.” $1 for a “hover?” That’s what they consider Engagement? A CPH? We’ll stick with Google for now…
- LiveUniverse buys Revver for “about $5 million”.
- Marketers are moving their attention and now, so is Nielsen.
- In other research, 62% of marketers feel that TV is less effective than it has been. (Duh.)
- Sony finally wins a format war! Blu-Ray emerges as the winner in the hi-def disc war. Steve is already positing the demise of Blu-Ray as on-demand, downloadable video begins to take hold. John and Chia-Lin think he’s jumping the gun, just a bit. An ODM-style brawl ensues. Chia-Lin sets up another Wine Wager.
What will be Steve’s prediction? Find out next episode… - Events: Chia-Lin will be speaking at the Spring VON show in San Jose
